Jonathan is an Associate Director in our firm’s celebrated Dispute Resolution practice group, focusing on complex and high-stakes commercial litigation and international arbitration. He is frequently called upon to argue significant disputes across a wide spectrum of industries, especially where the issues faced span multiple jurisdictions, are highly time-sensitive, and involve novel points of law.
 
Jonathan represents clients through disputes at all levels of the Singapore courts, including the Singapore International Commercial Court, as well as in international arbitration proceedings conducted under the SIAC, ICC, PCA, UNCITRAL and ICSID Rules. Most recently, he has managed trials and appeals involving complex commercial contracts, corporate and shareholder matters, as well as the vindication of Intellectual Property rights. He is also experienced in cases involving foreign governments and multinational corporations.
 
Jonathan graduated from the National University of Singapore, where he was a Kent Ridge Scholar. His skills as an advocate hark back to his university days where he was a decorated mooter who represented the university in the prestigious 13th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong.

Some of the matters in which Jonathan has acted include the following: 

  1. Represented an international contractor in two UNCITRAL arbitrations against the Government of Maldives for claims amounting to over US$155 million relating to expropriation of land and delays to a project to construct public housing over 10 islands.

  2. Representing a Korean manufacturer in 2 SIAC arbitrations against its Iranian exclusive distributor for claims worth more than US$387 million arising out of alleged breaches of distributorship agreements resulting in loss of market share in Iran, as well as its counterclaims for outstanding receivables and unauthorised use of trademarks.

  3. Represented an international communications equipment company in an ICC arbitration against a sovereign Asian government for claims amounting to US$25 million over a failed satellite communications project.

  4. Represented a Singapore advertising and graphic design firm in a claim against one of the most renowned operators of luxury hotels in the world in a claim for copyright infringement.

  5. Representing 377 purchasers of the TerraUSD cryptocurrency in a representative action suit against Terraform Labs, its founders and Luna Foundation Guard for claims arising out of the TerraUSD crash in 2022.
