Disputes star Senior Counsel Siraj Omar returns to Drew

We are proud to welcome back Senior Counsel Siraj Omar to our Dispute Resolution practice today. Siraj joins us as an Equity Director with his 7-strong team, including Director See Chern Yang.

Siraj has accumulated more than two decades of experience in complex dispute resolution, with particular expertise in banking and finance disputes, corporate/commercial litigation and insolvency and restructuring cases. He began his career at Drew before starting a successful boutique law practice, eventually tying up with an international firm for three years. Coming full circle, he has now re-joined our firm.

Siraj has been involved in numerous landmark cases. His past work includes acting for the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore in the first exercise of its enforcement powers under the Singapore Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, the first Singaporean restructuring of a global note and responding to investigations by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, United States Department of Justice and United Kingdom Serious Fraud Office, and acting in a representative action arising out of the 2008 financial crisis where 212 plaintiffs brought action against a financial institution.

Siraj has been described as a "star" and "a formidable litigator" in legal directories, and was named as a Leading Individual for Dispute Resolution by Asia-Pacific Legal 500 and a Disputes Star (Commercial & Transactions and Insolvency) by Benchmark Litigation. Chern Yang, who is one of the youngest to be appointed as a Principal Mediator and Fellow of the Singapore Mediation Centre and is an International Mediator at the Singapore International Mediation Centre, has similarly been praised as “a good team player” and “strategic thinker” by the Asia-Pacific Legal 500.   

Siraj was a member of the Singapore International Commercial Court Rules Sub-Committee, and currently sits on the Working Group of the Professional Conduct Council chaired by the Chief Justice of Singapore. Siraj is also a past member of the Council of The Law Society of Singapore. The Chief Justice of Singapore appointed Siraj to be Senior Counsel in January 2019.
