Shumin has an active disputes practice and is experienced in complex contractual disputes, shareholder's disputes, company law issues, and tortious actions. She also has particular experience with cryptocurrency and blockchain disputes, and freezing injunctions.
Shumin has acted for a wide range of clients from various industries before the Singapore Courts and in international arbitrations. This includes acting for companies in the web3, retail, hospitality, and shipping industries as well as venture capitalists and high net individuals.
Shumin graduated on the overall Dean’s List from the National University of Singapore and was placed fourth in the Singapore Bar exams. In the course of her undergraduate studies, she also obtained a University Degree in French Legal Studies from the University of Poitiers.
Some of the matters in which Shumin has handled include the following:
1. Lead counsel in an international arbitration acting for a stablecoin operator in a fraudulent misrepresentation claim, with more than USD 100 million in dispute.
2. Lead counsel in a claim brought by a leading stablecoin operator for fraud and breach of fiduciary duties, with the amount in dispute exceeding USD 450 million.
3. Lead counsel in a high-value, complex commercial arbitration involving issues of blockchain technology, acting for a web3 company and its founders in a dispute exceeding USD 100 million.
4. Acted as lead counsel for certain beneficiaries of a billion-dollar estate. Successfully advocated their interests in the trustee's application to exercise its right of recoupment, which was allowed for the first time in Singapore (reported at [2025] 3 SLR 16).
5. Lead counsel in a novel appeal on specific production of documents. The Court laid down new law on when an affidavit ought to be treated as conclusive for the purposes of an application under Order 11 rule 3 of the Rules of Court 2021 (reported at [2024] 5 SLR 86).
