Geographical Indications Act 2014 to enhance protection for businesses and consumers

23 Jun 2014

This update discusses the Geographical Indications Act (“Act”), which was passed by Parliament on 14 April 2014 and gazetted on 23 May 2014. Once the Act comes into effect, it will establish a system of registration for geographical indications (“GIs”), which will give the holder of a GI enhanced protection and certainty that a term is recognised as a GI. Owners of GIs should therefore take steps to submit an application for GI registration.
