In a recent article published by Asia IP, Director Lim Siau Wen shared her insights about the importance for educational institutions to consider protection of their IP assets, following a recent trademark infringement case in China won by a Singaporean international preschool chain, MindChamps International PreSchool.

The case centered around allegations of trademark violation by a school in China’s Shaanxi province, which utilized the name “MindChamps” alongside its Chinese equivalent "Maijiesi." The infringement extended to the replication of the Singaporean preschool's logo, school uniform, and interior design.

To better safeguard against unauthorised use, Siau Wen emphasised that the school should first ensure that it owns all IP rights in its intellectual assets, including those that were designed by third parties. She added, “In addition to registering its existing IP, the school should consider if it needs to register the foreign language equivalents of its existing marks both overseas and locally”.
