Drew & Napier’s Restructuring practice among the best in the world – GRR 30 2020

30 Nov 2020

Drew & Napier’s Corporate Restructuring & Workouts practice group is one of the world’s leading restructuring practice yet again in the latest 2020 edition of GRR 100 ranking guide by Global Restructuring Review (GRR). For the third consecutive year, the firm is featured in the elite GRR 30 ranking, appearing in the 25th position this year.

Headed by Sushil Nair and Julian Kwek, together with key directors Blossom Hing and Chan Wei Meng, the restructuring team stood out for our impressive track record of acting in some of the largest, most complex and novel cross-border debt restructuring and insolvency cases worldwide.

These include acting for the Public Utilities Board and the National Environment Agency of the Republic of Singapore, as well as the Securities Investors Association (Singapore) in relation to the debt restructuring of the Hyflux group, advising PetroChina International (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation on the liquidation of its joint venture, the restructuring of Brightoil Petroleum (S’pore) Pte. Ltd, which is part of the holistic debt restructuring of BrightOil Petroleum (Holdings) Limited and its subsidiaries over various jurisdictions, restructuring of KrisEnergy Ltd and its subsidiaries, and the second round of restructuring of TT International Limited, which involves the restructuring of an existing scheme of arrangement.

In the latest edition, the team was praised for being “highly knowledgeable not just on Singapore law matters, but also very familiar with the Indonesian legal framework and commercial realities, making them very effective when formulating strategy”.

Our Corporate Restructuring & Workouts practice group is consistently ranked as a top tier practice by prominent international legal directories and publications. The latest recognition by GRR comes after IFLR1000 ranked the group as a Tier 1 practice for Restructuring & Insolvency for 14 consecutive years in its latest 2021 rankings. In the 2020 editions of Chambers Asia-Pacific and Legal 500 Asia-Pacific, the group was ranked a top tier practice in Restructuring & Insolvency for 13 and 9 consecutive years respectively. In Chambers Asia-Pacific 2020, a client praised the team for its innovative approach. A client commented that the lawyers “have been outstanding in developing and implementing effective and creative strategies that have produced successful restructurings in circumstances that seemed hopeless at the start."

Our lawyers are also frequently recognised as leading lawyers for their outstanding work in the field of restructuring and insolvency. In the latest IFLR100 rankings, Sushil Nair was ranked a Market Leader, while Julian Kwek, Blossom Hing and Chan Wei Meng were ranked Highly Regarded lawyers. Our young and talented lawyers, Mohan Gopalan and Teri Cheng were also ranked as Rising Star lawyers.

Co-head of the Corporate Restructuring & Workouts practice Sushil Nair, who is also Drew’s Deputy CEO, said: “We are indebted to our dedicated team of lawyers for their relentless drive, hard work and contributions for our clients. We remain humbled and grateful to our clients for their continued trust in us in taking charge of some of their largest, most complex cases.”

To be included in the annual GRR 100 and GRR 30, firms are assessed on a variety of factors including the value of the restructuring and insolvency cases handled, the types of legal instruments used for restructuring and winding-up process, as well as the applications of cross-border recognitions.
