Senior associate Emmanuel Duncan Chua considers the latest amendments to the Malaysian Legal Profession Act, and the potential ramifications for the conduct of arbitrations by foreign lawyers in the country.
On 13 June 2012, the Malaysian government passed the Legal Profession (Amendment) Bill 2012 to amend the Legal Profession Act 1976. The amendments seek to liberalise the profession by allowing foreign law firms and foreign lawyers to practice in Malaysia, with the aim of developing Malaysia as an Islamic financial hub.
