Judicial mercy exercised by the Court of Appeal in imposing a fine in lieu of incarceration

The Court of Appeal recently imposed a $5,000 fine (in lieu of incarceration) on a lady who was convicted of contempt of court and sentenced to one-week imprisonment by the High Court.
The decision of VDZ v VEA [2020] SGCA 75 demonstrates the exercise of judicial mercy and how humanitarian considerations may take centre stage.
