Proposed Consolidation of Regulatory Controls of Western Medicine under the Health Products Act

16 Jan 2012

The Health Sciences Authority (“HSA”) has issued a consultation paper relating to the consolidation of regulatory controls for western medicine into the Health Products Act (“HPA”). Currently the regulatory controls are spread out under different legislation, including the Medicines Act and the Poisons Act. HSA has indicated that there would be no fundamental change to the regulatory policies and scope of products regulated.

The consultation paper proposes to create a new category of health products under the HPA. These are referred to as “therapeutic products”.
