About Werner

Werner is a Director in the Shipping & International Trade Practice Group, where he started as a pupil. For over a decade, Werner has in this very dynamic area of practice been particularly active in international dispute resolution. His clientele’s global reach requires him to advise on cross-border transactions and to maintain good contacts worldwide.

Areas of Practice

Werner’s practice encompasses both contentious and non-contentious wet and dry shipping work, corporate and commercial litigation and arbitration. The Practice Group’s areas of practice also include insurance, documentary credits, aviation, energy and commodities related disputes and criminal cases relating to the shipping industry.

He advises and acts for corporations, including ship owners, P & I clubs, international trading houses, oil and energy companies, as well as airlines.

Experience

The cases which Werner has handled include:
  • Collision of the vessels “GREEN POINT” and “ASTRO PEGASUS” in the Traffic Separation Scheme
  • Collision of the vessels “ASEAN POWER” and “SEA CHAMPION” near the Eastern Petroleum Anchorage
  • Collision of the vessel “ANL INDONESIA” and a Republic of Singapore Navy vessel “RSS COURAGEOUS” in the vicinity of the South China Sea
  • Collision of the vessel “UNI OBTAIN” with a fish farm in Serangoon Harbour
  • Collision of the vessel “SA VAAL” at Tanjong Pagar Terminal
  • Collision of the vessel “NAVIGATOR” at Vopak’s Pulau Sebarok Terminal
  • Sinking of the vessel “PARAKOU 1” near Horsburgh Lighthouse
  • A High Court determination on title to sue of a holder of bills of lading
  • A trial in the High Court involving a prime mover and trailer accident within port premises
  • Mareva injunctions and pre-judgment mandatory injunctions pursuant to letters of indemnity for discharge of cargo without production of original bills of lading
  • Arbitrations involving laytime and demurrage claims
  • LMAA arbitrations arising from charterparty and MOA disputes
  • PORAM arbitrations involving string contracts
  • An arbitration involving the sale and carriage of jetty piles to Cambodia of disputed quality
  • An arbitration involving a sale and purchase of a hotel in Thailand
  • Many successful recoveries of trade debts involving ship arrests
  • Cargo disputes with allegations of pilferage, mishandling and misdelivery
  • Claims arising from tug and tow accidents
  • Bunker quality claims including Singapore’s largest bunker contamination incident
  • Documentary credits disputes involving discrepancies and fraud in letters of credit, enforcement of bills of exchange, performance guarantees and trust receipts
