About Kiat Jinn

Kiat Jinn joined Drew & Napier’s Dispute Resolution Group in 2004 and was made an Associate Director in June 2009. Kiat Jinn joined another leading Singapore law firm’s corporate department between 2007 and 2008 where he was involved in mergers and acquisitions involving privately held companies and general corporate/employment advisory matters.

Kiat Jinn graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2002 and was admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 2003. He was also admitted to the Roll of Solicitors of the Supreme Court of England & Wales in October 2008.

Areas of Practice

Kiat Jinn’s practice covers a wide spectrum of civil and commercial litigation matters. Kiat Jinn has handled and assisted in matters that involve contractual disputes, breaches of directors’ duties, company and shareholder disputes (including statutory derivative actions and minority oppression actions), tort (general negligence, personal injury and occupiers’ liability), contentious probate, equity and trusts, and land law. Kiat Jinn has also handled and assisted in criminal matters, as well as disciplinary proceedings before the Singapore Medical Council.

Experience

Kiat Jinn’s experience includes advising, acting and assisting in the following matters:
  • Nissan North America Inc. & Anor v Europacific Parts International Inc. & Anor (Originating Summons No. 1380 of 2003) – this matter involved a US and Japanese multinational company in examining witnesses in Singapore to obtain oral and documentary evidence for use in proceedings pending before the US Courts. The application was made under the Hague Convention on the Taking Of Evidence Abroad In Civil & Commercial Matters.
  • David Stephen Wee & 7 Others v Philip Wee (Suit No. 519 of 2005) – this multi-million dollar probate/estate claim in the High Court involved issues of testamentary capacity, undue influence and breach of trust.
  • Puspharani Selvarani & Others v NTUC & TV Media (Suit No. 129 of 2005) – this was a widely publicised tort claim for damages for wrongful death arising from the consumption of “Slim 10” slimming pills.
  • Chiam Heng Luan & 4 Others v Chiam Heng Hsien & Others (Originating Summons No. 830 of 2006) – this much publicised claim in this long standing dispute involved the sale of a prime downtown 40,000 sq ft property valued at over S$100 million and involved various points of land law, proprietary estoppel and contractual licence.
  • Lion City Holdings Pte Ltd (in liquidation) v Jumabhoy Asad & Others [2004] 3 SLR 456 – this matter involved the amendment of pleadings.
  • Various shareholders’ disputes, minority oppression and statutory derivative actions by the minority shareholders pursuant to the Companies Act (Chapter 50).
  • Representing accused in road traffic offences, including a case involving a Japanese national which was reported in the Straits Times on 6 April 2006.
  • Acted for a prominent recreation club in a multi-million dollar tortious claim against a construction company arising from a chlorine gas leak which resulted in injuries to more than 50 people, substantial property damage and economic loss.
  • Acted for a prominent recreation club in a tortious claim involving personal injuries allegedly arising from occupiers’ liability and/or negligence.
