About Adrian
Adrian started his practice in Drew & Napier when he was called to the Singapore Bar. He became a Director on 1 May 2005. From 2001 to 2003, he was seconded to Singapore Network Services (later known as CrimsonLogic), a global e-Government IT service provider jointly owned by the Singapore Trade Development Board, SingTel, PSA Corp and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. As its General Counsel, he oversaw the set-up of the corporate legal infrastructure of the group in North America, South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa and negotiated with various foreign governments on the provision of e-Government services. He returned to Drew & Napier in April 2003.
Areas of Practice
Adrian is a litigator. His primary area of interest is in intellectual property and information technology law. He also advises clients on issues concerning the protection of IT rights.
Experience
Some notable cases Adrian has fought include:
- Taking action on behalf of a prominent family against defamatory statements made by an internet "blogger".
- Representing a public-listed US biotechnology company against a pharmaceutical giant to restrain groundless threats of infringement of patents for Hepatitis B vaccines, the first action of its kind in Singapore.
- Representing a leading automobile parts distributor against a claim by a leading European exhaust manufacturer for copyright infringement and passing-off in relation to the parallel import of automobile components and manufacturer's warranties.
- Representing a leading video distributor to defend a claim for conversion of copyright in film works recorded on magnetic media asserted by a Hong Kong film company.
- Representing a large Singapore manufacturer on a claim to restrain the anti-competitive practice of copying computer bar-code identification numbers on retail products.
- Enforcing the intellectual property rights of a Spanish company in its business name against the claims of its former Singapore partner.
- Acting in a shareholder dispute over ownership of copyright and trademarks in cartoon characters of a well-known media, publishing and entertainment company.
- Restraining unauthorised users of trademarks in internet domain names ("cyber-squatters").
- Defending a passing-off claim brought by an international hotel chain against a nightclub for injurious association.
- Obtaining damages against a major multinational developer of operating systems for infringement of copyright and misuse of confidential information.
- Representing an international bank in a dispute concerning defects in custom-made web-based software developed by a Singapore firm.
- Defending an international oil & gas corporation against a claim for breach of contract in relation to disputes concerning the construction of an international pipeline.
- Suing a major Singapore newspaper in relation to artistic works which caricatured a prominent Singapore businessman.
- Striking down a government statutory board's widely-used standard exclusion clause against sub-contractor
