Drew & Napier’s double delight at The Asian Lawyer’s Emerging Markets Awards 2015

19 Nov 2015

Two of Drew & Napier’s senior lawyers have been recognised as the best in Southeast Asia and India at The Asian Lawyer’s Emerging Markets Awards 2015.

Head of Drew’s IP Department Dedar Singh Gill won the title of “Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year”. Director Cavinder Bull, SC was named “Dispute Resolution Lawyer of the Year”. They emerged victorious amongst respected nominees across the region in the ceremony held on 18 November 2015.

On receiving this recognition, Mr Gill said, “I am honoured to receive this award. It would not have been possible without our clients’ support and the hard work of my IP colleagues.”

Mr Bull, SC, said, “I am truly humbled. I am blessed to work with an outstanding team of lawyers, and clients who choose to trust us with their most difficult problems.”

Most recently, Dedar successfully defended food-maker Petra Foods against Nestle in the High Court in a tussle over chocolate wafer shape trademarks. He also successfully defended the F1H20 powerboat race brand in an appeal brought by Formula One Licensing BV, the trade mark managers for the F1 race, against Idea Marketing SA’s F1H20 trade mark application.

Cavinder Bull, SC’s practice has a truly international reach. He successfully represented the Government of Laos in a challenge to an international arbitral tribunal’s ruling by Macau-based investor, Sanum Investments over expropriation claims of approximately US$900 million concerning a Bilateral Investment Treaty between Lao and the People’s Republic of China. This matter was also nominated for the Dispute of the Year award at the Emerging Markets Awards.

In addition, Cavinder acted in the well-known Yuko Oil saga, successfully defending Russian oil and gas company, Tomskneft, against multi-million dollar claims by Luxembourg investment firm, Yukos Capital. Cavinder also acted for the Government of Djibouti in proceedings in Court related to the building of a container terminal at the Port of Doraleh.

These accolades follow hot on the heels of our hat-trick at the inaugural Asialaw Asia-Pacific Dispute Resolution Awards 2015, where Drew was named “National Law Firm of the Year – Singapore” and “Best Domestic Arbitration Firm of the Year”, and CEO Davinder Singh, SC clinched the “Disputes Star of the Year – Singapore” award.
